Mesothelioma and Work Exposure

Workers who work with asbestos are at a higher risk of mesothelioma. Construction workers, firefighters and military veterans are at a higher risk.

Mesothelioma primarily affects the lung lining (pleural mesothelioma) or abdomen. In rare cases it can affect the testicles or the heart.

Signs and symptoms

The tissues that line the lungs, stomach and heart are referred to as mesothelium. Mesothelioma can be found in the mesothelium, when cells grow uncontrollably. Asbestos is believed to cause mesothelioma through DNA damage to cells. The damaged cells reproduce and the cancer spreads over time. It is unclear what other factors cause mesothelioma. Researchers have found asbestos exposure is a major cause of mesothelioma. Exposure to both indirect and direct asbestos is possible.

The most common form of mesothelioma starts in the tissue that surrounds each lung (the Pleura). Infrequently, it begins in the lining of the abdomen (the peritoneum) or in other parts of the body.

Early mesothelioma is typically not uncomfortable or painful. The symptoms could include a persistent, dry cough, weight loss, a fever, and abdominal pain. As tumors develop, they may cause pain to nerves and organs. Certain types of mesothelioma may be very aggressive, but those that are the most serious have a better chance to respond to treatment than other cancers such as colon or breast cancer.

Prognosis

As with all cancers, mesothelioma is triggered by a mutation in a cell's genetic code that allow it to grow unchecked. These cells then accumulate in the form of a tumor.
